Private, chauffeur-driven tours

One driver. One vehicle. Nobody staring at the hedge.

A private driver-guided tour of Ireland is what most of my American guests choose once they understand what it is. I match you with a family-run Irish company I’d send my own family with; they build the itinerary and drive it; I’m your point of contact the whole time you’re here.

What it is

The trip where everyone sees Ireland

The roads you want to be on — the coast, the peninsulas, the mountain passes, the lane to the townland your people left — are one and a half cars wide, hedged, and shared with tractors and sheep. Self-drive them and one of you spends the week driving. Coach them and you see Ireland through a window on someone else’s schedule.

A private driver-guide is the third way. A comfortable vehicle sized for your party. Someone who knows which viewpoint is empty at nine, which pub in Doolin has the session tonight, when to leave Killarney so the Gap of Dunloe is yours, and which of the famous stops aren’t worth your day. Nobody navigates. Nobody counts drinks. By the second day he’s part of the family — read what my guests wrote on the reviews page.

The honest arithmetic

When a driver costs less than the rental cars

Two couples, self-driving

  • Two rental cars, automatic surcharge on both
  • Collision cover at the desk — most US cards exclude Ireland
  • Fuel at roughly double US prices
  • Parking, tolls, the odd wrong turn
  • A designated driver every evening
  • Two people who saw the hedge

Two couples, one driver-guide

  • One vehicle, one daily rate, priced in US dollars
  • Insurance, fuel, parking and tolls included
  • Local knowledge you can’t rent
  • Everyone at the session, nobody driving home
  • The itinerary flexes with the weather and the mood
  • Four people who saw Ireland

For a party of four or more on the west coast, the two columns often land close to the same money. They are not the same trip. The full numbers are in what a trip to Ireland really costs.

Built for

The trips a private driver makes possible

  • Golf weeks

Clubs in the back, the golfers dropped at Ballybunion, the non-golfers on the Ring of Kerry, everyone at dinner.

  • Three generations

One minibus, one pace that flexes, grandparents up the Gap by pony and trap while the teenagers hike it.

  • Roots trips

The lane to the townland, the graveyard, the kitchen table of whoever farms it now — with a guide who knows the ground.

  • The west coast, properly

Kerry, Clare and Connemara without a single wasted hotel — the ten-day trip I’d choose for you.

Questions about private tours

What is a private chauffeur-driven tour of Ireland?

One driver-guide, one comfortable vehicle sized for your party, and an itinerary built for you alone. The driver knows the roads, the pubs, the pony men and the tee-time desks; you look out the window. No coach, no strangers, no set schedule.

How much does a private driver in Ireland cost?

More per day than a rental car and, for a party of four or more, often about the same per person once you add the insurance most US credit cards won’t cover here, the automatic surcharge, fuel, parking and tolls. Every trip is priced individually in US dollars by the family-run company I match you with.

Is a private tour better than self-driving in Ireland?

For the west coast, for groups, for anyone with mobility concerns and for anyone who wants a pint in the evening, yes. The roads you want to be on are narrow and hedged, and the person driving doesn’t see Ireland — they see the hedge. I’ve written honestly about driving here as an American.

Who are the drivers?

Family-run Irish tour companies I’ve vetted over seven years on the road — two or three of them, never more, so you’re never handed round a call centre. Their names are shared when we talk through your itinerary.

Can a private tour include golf, ancestry research or a castle stay?

All three, and usually in the same week. The driver drops the golfers at Ballybunion and takes the rest to the Gap of Dunloe; the genealogy day is planned before you fly; the castle night goes where you’ll remember it most.
